Coder/Biller Ratios

I have been searching all over the internet for some ratios on Physicians to Coder-Biller...  The Coder-Billers code from the physician's dictation, post charges, and follow up on denials.   My initial thought was 3-4 physicians per Coder-Biller.  I count a PA as 1/2 of a physician.

Am I right? Wrong? Any ideas?

I don't know what type of practice you have but in MGMA's Performance & Practices of Successful Medical Groups 2008 (based upon 2007 data) they show results for Patient accounting support staff per FTE physician. We use these publications for several different benchmarks. For multispecialty, All Owners, for example, they show that Better Performers report a .60 per FTE physician ratio. However, there are multiple ratios and different measurement methods you can use. These publications help us a great deal to determine benchmarks.
