TITLES - Do they matter?

By Joseph Feldman posted 02-05-2010 07:59

I was just speaking with one of my clients.  We were discussing the ability to attract quality talent.  My clients thought was to possibly change the title of the position from Administrator to CEO or Executive Director.  The requirements for the position and compensation would remain the same.  Would the title make the position more attractive?

In my experience in the Air Force, attracting the right talent is definately influenced by the job title you are advertising. This is especially true in the current generation of professionals who do not stay in one job for more than 5 years. The title is important to building their resume and for planning their career progression. It is important to note, however, the position title must match the duties.

Good question, Joe. I'll offer my own personal viewpoint. When I scan job opportunities, the title will catch my attention but the description will really drive my interest. That said, I think I'm seeing more "administrator" titles changing to "executive director", which seems to be an equivalent. CEO usually indicates a larger org chart that includes other "chiefs" - COO, CFO, CMO, etc.
