Advice Needed: Foot In the Door? (MBA/Healthcare future graduate)

Hi everyone,

My name is Kevin Hosey. This is my first blog entry and was hoping to receive some much needed advice.  I currently am working as a discharge planning / coordinating social worker (MSW) for the VA hospital in Tampa, FL.  I have about 5 years of work experience in the hospital setting.  I am scheduled to complete my MBA degree in August next year 2011 and am looking for tips.  I probably have a gazillion questions, however I will limit it to a few.  What different types of position titles are there in hospitals for MBA professionals?  How does one become a hospital administrator (starting out)?  Would my current experience be intriguing to employers?

All in all, I am trying to plan for the future and ultimately get a "foot in the door" per se.

Thanks in advance for any advice any of you out there can give.

Kevin,
People with business experience and education can fit into a number of roles in hospitals; supervision, management, and project management. Becoming a hospital administrator requires a progressive work experience of intensity (number of people and size of budget), variety (departments of differing responsiblities), and duration. It is my opinion that hosptials are very risky, they are under heavy finanical attack and this makes it increasingly hard to build a career. Since you are posting on this website you much have interest in medical practices as well. Like hospitals, builing your experience is important. Consider the medical practices in your geographic area. Some may have paid internships to help you get some experience. Good luck.
