Searching for good staff member

By Laura Millsap posted 08-02-2010 09:14

Our office is having a difficult time finding a permanent part time staff member to add to our office. We have advertised on craigslist and don't really get the greatest of resumes. If anyone has any suggestions of where we can advertise that doesn't cost a bunch or if anyone knows of someone needing a part time position please let me know. The position we are trying to fill is around 20 hours a week for a general front office receptionist. We are a very small office so we need someone to be flexible and a quick learner. If you have suggestions for job posting sights please let me know if anyone cares to send a resume my email is lmillsap@pca4u.com

Thanks for any help you can give.

Laura - I don't know if this will help, but I tell every part-time applicant (in the second interview) that I really don't like Part time employees...it goes against what is "natural" - I mean "most" part-time employees are NOT as dedicated to the organization and the organization may not be as dedicated to Part time staff, they get excluded from things like benefits (in most cases), they are seen as a "another person to train" from full-time seasoned staff...and they may have another job that they are more dedicated to. Having said that to the candidate, I also tell them that it they are selected for the position, they shouldn't see the position just as a "part time" job, they should look at the role more like an opportunity to get to know the organization while the organization gets to know them...in most cases part-time roles grow into full time jobs/responsibilities - there isn't a better way to hire then to hire from within the organization. Then you know what a person's skill set and personality are like...it makes it easier to find full time roles that are a fit for the organization and for the employee...these are just my thoughts - but I have seen them work - I truly don't like part-time employees, but I do keep a few positions in my organization open that are part time for the reasons explained above...
In short, it sounds like you might want do a check on the interview side of things - making sure you have a clear expectation up front of what is expected from the employee and of the organization. Then put a goal out there for the part-time employee to obtain so they can see an "opportunity" as a full time employee with the organization in the future.
If you try this, please let me know how it works for you.
