Three years ago, three health care industry groups – with support from the Commonwealth Fund – released a self-assessment tool for physician practices to evaluate patient safety processes and benchmark the results against other practices. Since then, the Physician Practice Patient Safety Assessment benchmarking tool has been downloaded by more than 4,000 individuals, domestically and internationally.

Today, the same three players – the Health Research and Educational Trust (HRET), the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) and MGMA – have launched the Pathways for Patient Safety tools, a first-of-a-kind series tailored for outpatient settings. The best part: they're online and they're free!

What you'll get with the newest patient safety tools for physician office practices:

  • Working as a Team – outlines actions required for building high-performing patient safety teams and techniques for effective communications among care givers to reduce patient harm.

  • Assessing Where You Stand – provides practical steps toward minimizing medical errors by assessing current patient-safety procedures, addressing practice culture and setting goals.

  • Creating Medication Safety – describes factors practices should consider when implementing or augmenting a medical reconciliation process, and when prescribing or administering medications that may be harmful to patients.

To celebrate the launch, MGMA is hosting a free Webinar tomorrow to explain the tools. If you're interesting in using them, now's the time to attend! Can't make the Webinar? Visit www.pathwaysforpatientsafety.org to download the free recorded version beginning Jan. 26.
