Since the 1990s, the number of integrated delivery systems (IDS) has increased but the challenges remain the same: how to align physicians and physician compensation with the IDS' goals; and how to set expectations and accountability that the medical practice and hospital can not only agree on, but follow.

For advice about overcoming these challenges we asked
Bob Bohlmann, FACMPE, a principal with the MGMA Health Care Consulting Group. He emphasizes what needs to happen prior and during integration with four essential tips to define the hospital-medical practice relationship.

  1. Identify the advantages, opportunities and goals of the integration.
  2. Identify the areas most affected.
  3. Identify the steps necessary to close the practice.
  4. Consider getting help with the integration.

Read all of Bob's IDS tips or check our IDS solution page for more help on hospital integration. Then, tell us what we're missing when it comes to IDS – suggest a topic for us to cover in the comments.
