Hospital-based Physician Employment Strategies – Five Critical Considerations

Hospital executives across the country are once again evaluating the potential to employ physicians as a strategy, and not just out of necessity.  Hospitals are often approached by physician practices suffering financial challenges. To protect market share, these ill-fated physicians are employed by the hospital, i.e., employment out of necessity.  Unfortunately, part of this move is linked to the fervor over healthcare reform and concerns over the possible move to a single pay system. A legitimate reason? Perhaps……  An even more legitimate reason, at present, is linked to a strategy which secures referral bases, captures admissions, AKA – MARKET SHARE, and improves financial results. I am not talking about hospitalists, ED physicians or anesthesia-based services, which have operated in employment arrangements or through outsource agreements for many years. I am talking about traditional standalone specialties like Gastroenterology, Urology, Orthopedics, ENT, etc.

To employ or not to employ, that is the ultimate question. In this white paper we will share five key considerations “C” level executives should evaluate in determining if a physician employment strategy is the right answer for your situation. If you would like to read the rest of this unique paper, see below.
