Interview antics

We are all aware of the importance of the job interview.  It gives the interviewer a chance to assess the education, experience and skills of a potential employee.  It gives the interviewee a chance to find out more about the employer - both the organization as a whole and the potential supervisor.  Yet, interviews don't always go as planned.  From unbelievable questions to outrageous responses, there are many good stories to share.  Here's your chance to share those stories.  Allow me to start with one of my favorites:

I was interviewing applicants for a supervisory position.  I was particularly excited about one young lady who was an LPN with charge nurse experience at another organization.  As I called her from the reception area she followed me into my office, slumped into a chair and said, "Hey."  (Off to a great start!)  I started by giving her an overview of the position and asked if she felt she would be able fulfill the essential parts of the job Her response was, "As long as it doesn't interfere with my nights, weekends or holidays, I can do it.  I gotta have my social life."  (Her flexibility was overwhelming.)  I quickly decided to jump ahead a few questions and asked her about her leadership style.  She replied, "Do you want to know about it before or after I was written up?"  Recovering from a moment of speechlessness, I asked her to explain.  "Well," she said, "I got written up about two months into the job.  They said I let the power go to my head.  After that, I laid pretty low and just did what I was told."  While I had to give her high marks for honesty, I saw no real need to continue the interview.

Now, let's hear some other favorites...

Working in the inner city has its own set of Challenges. When I first entered this position, I needed to recruit some staff. We had several working at the time from a temp agency. One I wanted to interview had been in the military. Aha, good I said. I asked him to tell me about his experiences. "I really didn't have much, as it was mostly in the brig." Aghast, I said, " You answered no to any felonies on the employment form." He replied, Well on the outside I don,t besides t wasn't a felony, it was manslaughter. So I don't put a yes on the form." Besides, he said, you would not hire me." Well, I really cannot hire you as this is a felony and you must term now. " He was very angry and upset. I immediately called the temp agency. Did you even ask about felonies? Yes, she replied. of course, but it was in the military and we don't count that. End of story and end of tem agency.
