We have to wait 4 years?

By Bob Harvey posted 04-09-2010 11:24

I wonder if any of my colleagues are experiencing the same questions we are from our patients since the health payment reform legislation was passed.  While my paint brush is small, I admit,  my thoughts are not meant to cover any group other than those I have experienced.

The family practices that I am responsible for are all owned by our community hospital.  As such we stand on the same principles, mission and policies of our hospital.  We see who needs to be seen as many of you do I am sure.  We always have and unless something critical happens (things haven't already become critical?) we'll maintain that mission and vision.

However...I am amazed at the number of patients whose only concept of this legislation is that "I'm getting free healthcare and I want it now".  When told that benefits will not be seen for another four years we are met with surprise which then turns into anger.  "I was told my healthcare was free."  Sorry pal that's the way it is.

So much of the discussion on this topic has dwelled on the goings-on in Washington, DC, we seemed to have left out a significant portion of our population.  Without making accusations I wonder if this was done intentionally.  Keep 'em ignorant and only tell them what they want to hear.    Couple this with the continuous debate, suspension, missed deadlines and back room discussion of SGR reform what are practices to do?

For this tenured veteran of the healthcare management work place I find myself asking more and more, is it time to call it quits, sit back with a cold one and watch from a distance?  But then I find myself getting out of bed each day refusing to give in.  We have patients to take care of.

See you on the flip side.

Bob, we're all guilty of hearing what we want to hear- and that's all. "I was told my healthcare was free": Really? By whom? And did you really think you could just wander into any healthcare facility, make that announcement, and receive care?
Your writings subtly touch on a few subjects: politics in America, the social entitlement mentality, and the eventual collapse of primary care (and potentially American model healthcare- note I didn't say "free market healthcare") via SGR mismanagement. Any one of these could make an excellent book all by itself. I'll buy a cold one and the Cliff Note versions and read on.

Jane, excellent comment. Many times we hear those aspects of a topic that peak our personal itnerests. It is far easier to rely of the Cliff Note versions (I don't even know if Cliff Notes still exist, but if not they were a synopsis of books often used by college students in the past to avoid reading the full assignment...not that I would have ever done that).
I am very apolitical in this regard, but I respect those opinions that are based on the full facts, even if I disagree with those opinions.
Far too often, however, sound bites often are taken as the gospel, especially if they reflect our personal views.

Bob, I agree that there are many people who only listen to the shouting, and when people are shouting that the government is going to give everybody free health care, some in the audience believe them. Hopefully, the shouting will die down and people will begin to understand what the bill really means.

Bob, I could not agree with your thoughts more. This health care bill is just another way to "Spread the Wealth Around". I am sure that the American Peoples Voices will be heard in November and continue for a very long time. It seems as though the health care industry is a puppet right now and all the strings are being pulled in Washington. I hope this will soon change. Healthcare is a very expensive business to operate, as we all know, just seems as though Washington cant seem to get the real facts straight, or just dont want to hear them.

Good thoughts Tom.

Bob, I don't necessarily agree that the information isn't out there. I've certainly seen plenty of it, both in print and electronically. However, I do think that most people aren't going to see it without it being spoon-fed to them. I also think that the people who are in need of the help are not going to understand why this isn't happening right away for them. People are definitely restless...
As for that cold one, count me in!

Dea, thanks. So much noise...so little substance. Reality, it seems, does not get the same media attention. Even they act as if everything is now fixed since the legislation has been signed. Oh...that happened all right, but why has nothing changed?

Bob-I definitely "hear ya". I am asked all of the time what my physicians think about all of this. I tell them something similar, I think to what you are implying here. Business as usual. We still have patients who need treatment and this hasn't changed a thing for us on a day-by-day basis.
I will still have a cold one anyways!
