Ohio MGMA President and her Spare time

By Rosie Taulbee posted 08-28-2008 17:01

President of the Ohio Medical Group Management Association requires leadership to carry out the Association’s mission.  The mission statement includes:  promote mutual education in the field of medical group practice administration; disseminate information of mutual interest to members; improve administration in the medical groups in order to serve the members of the Association; cooperate with other organizations with similar aims and objectives and provide an environment of networking for members.  Rosie Taulbee, FACMPE takes her volunteer role very seriously as Ohio’s President.  She is a 20+ year member of the national MGMA and member of the Ohio MGMA and local affiliate Cincinnati MGMA since 1995.

Rosie has been a manager for private practice since 1978 in the areas of orthopedics, internal medicine, and currently the vitreo-retinal division of Tri-State Centers for Sight, Inc.

SPARE TIME?  If you are a bowler in Ohio you probably know Rosie.  She is an avid bowler in prior years bowling in 7 leagues per week. Bowling is a participatory sport but there is also a volunteer side for the sport.  On the local level Rosie is a Director of the local Greater Cincinnati USBC (United States Bowling Congress) Youth Association and President of the local Greater Cincinnati USBC Women’s Bowling Association on the State level she is a Director of the Foundation of the Bowling Center Association of Ohio and 2nd VP of the Ohio USBC Women’s Bowling Association. These positions require leadership to promote the bowling mission of mutual educational programs, disseminate information to members, host multiple tournaments and hold fund raising events for charities along with the multitude of administrative management duties.

These administrative duties and policies/procedures are parallel between these two organizations for the world of medicine and bowling.  Taulbee states, “What I learn in the medical education seminars and conferences I use in the bowling world and vice versa”. Each organization has a body of knowledge and requires marketing, membership services and retention, finance and budget, scholarships, educational programs, websites-newsletters, recognition for personal and team accomplishments, legislative, and a volunteer Board of Directors. These duties are carried out with similar examples of the crossover between the organizations and include working with multiple levels of education, ages and geographic size organizations for a common goal. —maintaining integrity.

On the lanes the bowler has to maintain arm swing, ball speed, lift and angle to the pins, in medicine employees perform duties for patients to follow their treatment plan.  In bowling you learn lane specifications and conditioning (lane oil patterns), equipment requirements for ball core, weight blocks and hardness reaction. It is important to be aware of how proprietors maintain league membership (their base income), market their centers, host corporate and friendship parties, offer private lessons, bid on tournaments and the critical maintenance of the center from the days of pinsetters to the current machine with computer chips.  In addition, they are selling food, karaoke participation and contests, handling the bar business and keeping up with the latest new balls, shoes, bags and accessories in their pro-shop. In medicine the parallel would be maintaining your facilities, equipment, marketing, contracts, research studies, personnel, physician schedules and governance, medical records, billing/insurance and reimbursement.

Bowling associations are governed by the bylaws and rules/regulations voted upon by National delegates and State delegates annually. Other areas of knowledge involve research and development for changing lane surfaces (wood versus synthetic), balls, pins or questions regarding league play or tournament competition.  Associations work with proprietors to host local or State Championship tournaments, conventions and charity fundraisers. Medical association are also governed by the bylaws and rules/regulations voted upon by the membership at their meetings.

Whether medical or bowling the Board of Directors is volunteer and elected by the membership.  Each elected individual accepts projects that will expose them to uncharted areas and build their skills, self-esteem and open new areas of experience for individuals as teams working together that, months prior to election, sometimes never knew of each other.  Each Association has chartered affiliates at the local, State and National levels and pay dues at each of the levels.   Medical – MGMA and Bowling – USBC.

Bowling honors awarded to the local women’s association under Taulbee’s Presidency she discusses proudly are the National recognition for percentage of increased funds raised for the Bowlers to Veterans Link (BVL). She and the committee chairperson were awarded a trip to Washington DC to participate in the Veterans Day Ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery. For the past 4 out of 5 years she accepted the national recognition for a local women’s association raising the most funds for the International Bowling Museum located in St Louis, Missouri. Her local women’s association won 2nd place in the national contest for best website, www.cincybowl.com. The State Women’s association won 2nd place in the national contest for overall communication to their membership. Other accomplishments include induction into the local women’s association Hall of Fame and the State Bowling Council Hall of Fame and she received the 2007 President of the year Award from the Ohio Bowling President’s Club.  The most prestigious medical organization credential Rosie achieved in 2003, that she encourages every individual and medical group practice to market, is Fellowship in the ACMPE.

The possibility that whether you are a youth or adult, physically handicapped, wheelchair bound or blind you can participate in the sport of bowling. It is diverse enough to find your level to volunteer. Next time you go bowling when you enter a bowling center remember who maintains the integrity of the sport-you may see that volunteer at her full time position as manager of your physician’s medical group practice.
