Who to hire: the experienced or the teachable?

By Samuel Kohan

Employers who make hiring decisions primarily based on the level of experience and education, are likely to hire wrong people.  The primary consideration should be the job applicant’s character.

Of course, education and experience are important, if not essential, depending on the position. However, a highly educated and experienced individual who does not share the same corporate values may not be a successful hire. An employer may not be able to teach ethics, commitment, and intelligence to an employee, but specific knowledge and skills are teachable.

For instance, teaching an intelligent individual the skills to work with a software or technology tools may be affordable in comparison to hiring an individual who is trained to operate a specific tools, but lacks proper work ethics.

Therefore, experience alone should not be the sole determining factor in making a hiring decision.
