Empower staff to solve problems

A patient called this week with a problem that was escalated to my attention. It was relatively easy to solve and it gave me a good feeling to be helping. This situation reminded me of the early days in my career while working as a staff nurse in a hospital. Getting someone positioned comfortably, sharing information that put a mind at ease, and solving a problem with patient care all provided me with immediate rewards. Two very different things come to mind when I consider this current event and my past memory. The first is a question what makes management rewarding? What keeps us pushing forward each day? The second thought is about moving decision making to the front line with the patients. What barriers exist in our organizations that keep staff from solving problems for our patients? Being responsive feels good for the patient and the staff, where can we make that easier? Feeling the rewards and empowering staff seem to be tied together in the book Open Leadership by Charlene Li. Our openness as leaders is part of how we are open as organizations. You can take a quick survey on your openness as a leader at the author’s website at http://www.charleneli.com/resources/open-leadership-skills-assessment/
