My physician assistants voice dissatisfaction over uncompensated administrative time. It is very difficult to obtain state comparisons because the surveys do not make a distinction between clinical and administrative time when stating hours per week. AAPA's survey says "working at least 32 hours per week". However, it does not say that these 32 hours are only clinical. In the past, we used a 4-1 ratio to compensate for admin time, but went away from it and opted for slightly higher hourly rates based on years of experience.
I know think we need to go with a set annual salary based on our FTE of 32 clinical hours per week, but don't know what figure to use that adequately represents admin and clinical time! Any help? We are a 6 physician, 4 PA-C family practice with extended evening and weekend hours. Our benefit package is quite generous, but for some reason is always overlooked by PA's who focus on a hourly rate. Our PA-C's do not take call, but do cover for absent MD's frequently while still managing their own scheduled patients and follow up.
