Health spending expected to grow 5.6 percent this year; was 3.6 percent last year

A bad economy combined with the impact of the implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) caused health spending to go up by a relatively modest 3.6 percent in 2013, according to CMS projections cited by Politico.
As the economy turns around, spending growth for 2014 is expected to be higher, at 5.6 percent. Spending growth increases are projected to then go over 6 percent annually, a concern because such spending growth will continue to outpace overall gains in gross domestic product.

CMS actuaries cited economic factors as being more responsible for the change, saying it is too early to know how ACA rules changes might impact spending.
