In just two weeks, your medical group may be required by law to establish an identity-theft prevention program to protect your patients. We hope that you're well on your way to complying with the Federal Trade Commission's (FTC's) Red Flags rule, effective May 1. If not, there's still time – and we'd like to help.

Health care organizations have enjoyed a six-month delay in Red Flags enforcement, due to advocacy efforts by MGMA and other medical organizations. Whether you're prepared to thwart identity theft or need some help, check out these MGMA resources:
  • MGMA Red Flags Rule Summary
Our Government Affairs Department clarifies the legislative mumbo-jumbo and describes who's a "creditor," what "covered accounts" are all about and how to detect identity-theft risks ("red flags") that may exist in your practice.

  • Red Flags Rule Resource Center
We've gathered links to the FTC's Red Flags Web site and created sample policies to get your program started. MGMA has partnered with the American Health Lawyers Association to bring you a special member price on its Red Flags resource documents.

  • On-Demand Red Flags Webinar
Available to MGMA members only, this Webinar discusses the requirements of the Red Flags rule, reviews guidelines from the FTC and highlights online resources available to members.

Caren Baginski is MGMA's Web content writer/editor.
